  • Check moonrise and moonset for your exact site, not just the phase. A last-quarter moon rising at 1am still destroys the deep-sky hours after it appears.
  • Plan around the moon, not just against it. If the moon sets at 11pm, your window is 11pm–3am. If it rises at 3am, your window ends at 3am.

  • Darkness (Bortle / SQM) — how much artificial light pollutes your site. Bortle 4 is a realistic target for most of the country; Bortle 1–2 exists at the protected sites but demands a long drive.
